THE PURPOSE OF BAPTISM
Baptism is a symbolic act that goes hand in hand with receiving salvation through Jesus Christ. Through his sacrifice on behalf of God's love (John 3:16), we are made new, as seen in 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Therefore, salvation and water baptism are acts of faith that testify of our decision to walk in the newness of Christ, as it is also confirmed in Acts 2:38 (KJV) Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
So, as you can see being submerged in the water for those brief few seconds is not a mere act of enjoying the cool and refreshing feeling of the water but is a reminder that we are being buried with Christ and rising to new life in him. For one of the purposes of salvation is that we may experience an abundant life.
Prior to Jesus stepping into our lives we were spiritually dead, but Ephesians 2:4-8 (KJV) tells us: 4. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5. Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6. And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7. That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8. For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
